Five Borough Songbook: Make it a Staten Island Sunday
It’s going to be a beautiful day on Sunday, perfect for a day out in NYC’s southernmost borough, capped off with the Staten Island Premiere of the Five Borough Songbook, Volume III at 4pm, under the gargoyle topped towers of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Staten Island is home to some of our favorite spots in the city, many of which are just a brief hike or ride from the concert. We’d like to humbly suggest a few favorites to assist you in making a day of it.
Some reading for the commute:
… from our blog, posts about the Songbook’s 15 composers and their songs and a special profile on Songbook lyricist Valerie Seeley.
… check out our Songbook artists from the supergroup Kaleidoscope Vocal Ensemble and our co-commissioners and co-presenters, the fellow NYC venue explorers On Site Opera.
… read the words of some of the Songbook’s poets: Amy Lowell, Nick Main, Noel Quiñones, Firas Sulaiman, and Joseph Tusiani.
Food and Drink
New Asha Sri Lankan Restaurant: for subtle beads of spice-induced sweat and tears of joy.
El Pastorcito: a hidden gem with homestyle eats.
SI is home to two of our favorite breweries: Kills Boro Brewing Co. (open 2–10pm) and Flagship Brewing Company (open noon-8pm), both sporting pleasant outdoor seating. Kills Boro, through their on-site brewpub Craft House, also features some very tasty BBQ.
Every Thing Goes Book Cafe, the hippest bookstore in Staten Island. Please strike up a conversation with the fine proprietors of this establishment.
Enoteca Maria, just off the ferry and home of “Nonna’s of the World,” menus created and prepared by grandmothers from across the globe.
The grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden. are also home to the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, the Staten Island Museum, and the Noble Maritime Collection, all hosts of past 5BMF events. A 10 minute drive to the concert.
