MISSION & HISTORY
MISSION
Five Boroughs Music Festival’s mission is to enrich communities and cultivate new audiences for chamber music by presenting world-class, affordable concerts in all corners of New York City. We collaborate with local cultural institutions to present up-and-coming artists alongside the genre’s most distinguished performers. We also challenge the standard definition of ‘chamber music’ by featuring a broad range of musical styles, from early music to contemporary works, world and folk music, and other non-classical forms.
American Contemporary Music Ensemble at the National Opera Center, September 2015.
HISTORY
Lauded as “imaginative” by The New York Times, “enterprising” by The New Yorker, and “vital” by WQXR, Five Boroughs Music Festival has been recognized since our earliest days for presenting chamber music of the highest caliber in every borough of NYC, serving local audiences and inspiring music lovers to look beyond Manhattan for outstanding concerts. 5BMF productions feature some of the scene’s top musicians and are carried out in partnership with a wide variety of arts and cultural organizations, in equal celebration of the music and musicians as well as the concert venues and their communities.
Since 2007, 5BMF has presented more than 140 concerts of over 90 unique programs, in more than 70 venues across the city. Our artist roster of over 600 individual performers and ensembles is comprised of talented emerging artists and distinguished musicians alike, representing an incredibly diverse range of musical genres and styles. 5BMF’s venues are just as eclectic, and have included performing arts spaces, cultural centers, and historic NYC landmarks such as Federal Hall, Pregones Theater, Flushing Town Hall, King Manor Museum, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, the Alice Austen House, and the Staten Island Museum, to name merely a few.
As champions of new music, 5BMF has commissioned more than 70 composers and presented World Premieres of their works throughout every borough of New York City, most notably the three borough-wide tours of our Five Borough Songbook Volumes I, II and III. Our outreach initiatives continue to expand every year, and have included program-related interactive lectures and discussions, public masterclasses, and free public programming.
