Harlem Quartet

Harlem Quartet

Beethoven, Wynton Marsalis, William Bolcom, William Grant Still + more

In many ways, Ludwig van Beethoven’s turbulent and fiercely concentrated Op. 95 “Serioso” Quartet points toward the restless individuality that defines so much American music today. Its sharp contrasts, rhythmic urgency, and emotional directness resonate across genres and generations—from the jazz-infused classical language of William Bolcom, to the stylistic fluency and improvisatory spirit of Wynton Marsalis, the lyrical originality of William Grant Still, and the virtuosic cross-cultural voice of Aldo López-Gavilán. Though separated by centuries and traditions, these composers share a commitment to breaking boundaries while speaking in unmistakably personal voices.

About the Artists

Harlem Quartet

The Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, featuring Ilmar Gavilán, Melissa White, Jaime Amador, and Felix Umansky, has earned acclaim for its dynamic performances and fresh approach to classical music. Praised by The New York Times for its "panache," Harlem Quartet performs classical masterworks alongside jazz, Latin, and contemporary repertoire, championing music by composers from historically underrepresented backgrounds. The quartet has appeared throughout the United States and on four continents, performing at leading venues including Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, and the White House, appearing on the Today Show and PBS NewsHour, and collaborating with distinguished artists including Paquito D'Rivera, Anthony McGill, Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke, and Imani Winds.

Equally committed to education and community engagement, Harlem Quartet has developed residencies and outreach programs with schools, universities, and arts organizations across the country and abroad. The ensemble has served as quartet-in-residence at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University and the Royal College of Music in London. In 2024, Harlem Quartet won a Grammy Award alongside Imani Winds for their recording "Passion for BACH & COLTRANE," and their recent recording "Havana Meets Harlem" received a Latin Grammy nomination.
